a tribute to all things fashion

Bling Bling!

omfg...diversity is SO in

Since I began working in the costume shop in 2004, I have continually kept an eye on different forms of costuming. Also, I have a recent re-obsession with My Chemical Romance. My point being: Each of their music videos represents a specific "genre" of the fashion and costuming world. I will post a small sampling of their videos to show just how much time and thought had to have gone into each one. The costumes are made to not only reflect the band's personal style, but also to allude to another time. Costuming is a form of art and these music videos are a good example.

apart of me

My wristlet has become apart of me. Wristlets are probably the greatest invention ever. They are perfect for going out at night with your friends, to a party or a bar, or they are nice to use inside another purse as a wallet. I love them because they hang around your wrist and you don't have to worry about carring around a purse over your shoulder or on your elbow. You can dance, hold a drink or clip it to your belt loop and not have to worry about it being in the way, but you still have everything with you and not sitting somewhere that you are not watching it the whole time ( like a purse). It is nice for the neccesities; your id's, credit card, phone, and your camera. PERFECT!!! I have used mine so much that it is starting to rip, but i am definently going to get it fixed because I can't live without it. I LOVE WRISTLETS!!!~kmf

rising up from the grave!

i love how some trends die and some trends come back from the grave. Some come back with a new twist and some just come back period. Good examples of this are-

1. Leggings: I'll admit it, I own three pairs - black, bro
wn and grey - and yes I do wear them underneath jean skirts. Now what era does that remind you of? the 80s!!! Got to love the 80s. Girls are wearing them left and right these days and I have to say they do look pretty hot!

2. Bows: I have no clue what era these are from but I
do remember wearing them when I was younger which was the early 90s. I actually have the funniest story about my old "bow wearing days."
When I was younger, my mom, sister & I used to make these amazing big bows. We used to add glitter glitz and whatever else we could find. My favorite bows were the ones where we added the huge gems that you could buy at hobby lobby, Michaels, etc. I was wearing one of these bows one day while we were watching "Hook." I think it was 3rd grade. Anyways... I was bored to death and so I started to pick off the gems from my bow. I finally got one of the big suckers off and started to look at the pretty thing - remember I was in 3rd grade. So.. I decided to do the SMARTEST thing I think I have ever done in my life - stick in my ear. Well the gem happened to be the exact same size as my ear opening and it got stuck. I ended up having to go to the doctor's get it vacuumed out and be eternally made fun of by my family and friends.. hope that made you laugh.
now girls still continue with this trend, but they aren't normally as large as my palm or covered in gems. Instead girls wear tied in a bow on their pony tail following the "preppy style"

3. Popped Collars- as much as people might think this is a new trend, it really isn't. My mom sadly admits that she was quite the preppy gal when she was younger - wearing lacoste and popping her collar, which was around the early to late 70s. Oh boy mom, sometimes I wonder... nowadays people like Three 6 Mafia (rappers if you didn't know) are making tributes to the popping collar action. Interesante if I do say so myself.

4. Head Bands- Now I loved loved loved head bands as a kid. I was one of those goofy kids who used to always hav
e that awkward haircut that was mix between a bull cut and a mullet. Yes you heard right - I always wonder what my parent's were thinking. Anyways, in order to make up for this disasterous haircut I would hide it with headbands - big, small, with bows attached, plastic, cloth, homemade and storebought - anyone would work. Nowadays girls have brought the trend back.and I will admit that I was never able to let go of this trend - although I think my hair isn't as bad as it used to be though. (Thats me on the right with the headband and yes matching dress with my sister)

Ok, well those are all I can think of right now but I promise you that if I do remember I will add more!

this blog

I never said you have to buy all brand label clothing, personally my passion is fashion so I like those brands, but I have never looked down on a person who can't aford them and no where in this blog have i ever talked about that. Obviously people have not read all of the entries, because I wrote about one where I said I love buying stuff from Target. Maybe you think we are being materialistic but that is not the message that we are sending out by this blog. I never said that people who don't wear designers are inferior, I am trying to get across to people that you can look good no matter where you shop. I know everyone has different styles and I am not saying any one style is better than another. I just like to write about my own personal style. I am going into the fashion industy and that is what I am interested in. Some people are interested in art, writing, sports....Fashion is what I am interested in as a form of my own personal expression, just like art. You may find that materialistic but its not. I am not going to let anyone make me feel bad about what I am passionate about. Just as I am not writing on your blogs or coming up to your face saying your a bad person. I would never judge you and what you write about. Just as you think we are bad people for writing about trends we find odd, you should think about how you are critizing us by making yourselves seem like better people. ~kmf

....

this is my extreme apology to all of those people in our class who i offended. that was never my intention. let me explain myself though to make things clear -

who i was talking about was my personal friends who don't live out their cars but leave all of their clothing - "their entire closet" - in their because they are too lazy to clean it out. i never meant to offend or make fun of people who aren't as lucky to live in homes.

As for megan's comment - if you want me to be real then fine, I'll be real. I do not have everything handed to me. I have been working since I was 15 and pay for everything that I want, and hate it when I have to ask my parents for any money. I paid for my car bill, insurance, clothing and phone bill all throughout high school. I pay for my education here at SMC which means that I'll have lots of lovely loans to pay off when I graduate in about 1 1/2. Oh yeah and I have about $10 in my bank account right. My family isn't rich or poor but we have gone through our struggles as much as the next person. My dad is currently jobless for the second time in a matter of two years. He moved his entire family to a whole new state in order for a job and lost it a year later - sucks right? Oh and that's not it either, my family has dealt with alcoholism, depression, major heart surgery and death.
So no, I'm not perfect nor am I fashionable myself - my favorite stores are Old Navy, TJMaxx and Target - real expensive right?? I wear some jewelry and buy some clothing that most of my friends think are hideous but do I care, no. I have never owned anything from Banana Republic or any other ritzy stores like that - and yes I think BR is ritzy. My most expensive "label" item is from Coach and it was a gift.

I am honestly sorry if I offended anyone but you offended me as well by making ridiculous accusations about a person who you don't even know.

funfun

this blog is supposed to be just for fun. we're not serious. if we actually believed it in the sense that we will actually act uncivil to certain people because of what they wear, we'd be horrible people.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
pretending to be someone you're not, what else are blogs about?

that's just lazy

There's always "that girl," the one who wears the same pajama pants e-v-e-r-y day. I lived with "that girl" my freshman year. She ended up dropping out of our school because she was depressed. Geesh I wonder why, maybe it's because she didn't bother to make herself feel better. There were all kinds of other things which contributed to the mess, but wearing the same, sad, sloppy pair of pajama pants everyday cannot be healthy or fun. There is a girl I see every so often who wears blue pajama pants with snow flakes or something on them, and what makes it even worse is the fact that she does not look like she showers either. I have to admit, my freshman year, I had "time managment" issues and didn't squeeze in a shower everyday. I think everyone has gone through that at some point, but I eventually got over it. Further more, if I didn't shower I would at least make an effort to do something about it, like wearing actual clothes. Wearing your pajamas to class is usually the second benefit that people will mention when talking about why it's cool to go to a women's college, but I think this is lame. I don't see how you can feel studious while wearing what you slept in the night before...it implies sleeping, not thinking.
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned (no pun intended), but I think that everyone, everyday should dress as if they were going somewhere. You don't have to get fancy and I'm not implying that everyone should wear poodle skirts and suit ties everyday, but at least a nice, non-smelly pair of pants, jeans even. That's all I ask.

I <3 JUICY COUTURE

Juicy is my favorite brand. They have the cutest everything! I love their shoes, their jewelry, their accessories, their clothing, and especially their velour jumpsuits! I live in them. I have eight which is really sad because they are about $220, so that is over $1800 dollars that I have spent in sweats alone in the past 4 years. AHHHHH. Good thing my dad can't see my bank statement. That would not be good. Anyways, they are the best to wear anywhere! I wear them to class, traveling, to my boyfriends to lounge around, and to the mall when I don't want to dress up but still look cute. I recommend that everyone should buy one. They last forever and are super cute. They come in every color possible and they have some with really cute designs. There is one with a cupcake on the back right now, and it says "Cupcake Couture". I love it!!! So everyone should go out and pick one up. They are adorable! Everyone should walk around with "Juicy" on their butt!

blue jeans & white stains DONT mix

now don't get my wrong - i like snow as much as the next person and i don't mind the weather (especially if it gets things canceled that i want to be canceled) - but it does do a number on your blue jeans. At first, the snow and ice is so pretty, but then comes the warm weather that we all want and desire. Along with the warm weather comes melting and the ice, snow and ice salt mixes together into big puddles. Now I don't know about everyone else, but I wear my jeans just a bit longer than my ankles so that they somewhat hang over my shoes, in doing this I leave them wide open for any mess on the streets, roads and sidewalks. Thus this icky white business chart thingy begins to form around the back of your jeans. It looks awful and hardens up when it dries which feels really weird on your legs. I don't know about everyone else either, but no way do I have the money to own 50 billion pairs of blue jeans or wash my 3 pairs every week. I guess that I will just have to keep along with this fashion blunder.

living life in the fast lane

i never understood how someone could live in their cars. This may not make sense in the fashion world - but in all reality it does. I had friends in high school who would pretty much live out of their car. How is that sanitary and fashionable? How does one shower, do their hair, brush their teeth, etc.? Also storing your clothing in your car can also be quite disgusting. Your clothes change in temperature as the weather does and don't even think about leaving a black shirt on top of the clothes pile - you will be quite toasty if you decide you want to wear that particular item. You can't have much room either - and it will most likely, even if you do laundry, start to smell since the clothing will be either in the back seat, on the floor or even in the trunk. Overall, leaving a few items of clothing like a sweatshirt and a pair of shoes in your car seems reasonable, but holding your entire closet and dresser in their is downright gross.

Sweaters, sweatpants and loafers don't mix!

Why do people find it cute to wear cable knit sweaters with sweatpants and loafers? Ewww!!! I guarantee no one ever told them that it looked cute together. I understand maybe one day you can't find anything to wear or you are doing your laundry, but all the time? NO!!! Never should loafers be worn with sweatpants. It reminds me of when I go to the gym and I see old men walking on the track wearing workout shorts and loafers with white socks up to their mid calf. And then they are wearing polo's too. This is when I think that some people just might no own mirrors. I don't know how any sain person could walk of the house and not see that their outfit does not go at all and looks completely horrendous! My advice to these people: Buy a mirror and don't mix work shoes with pajamas!

Just Plain Ugly

Is it necessary for people to wear ugly snow boots? NO! There are adorable snow shoes in every store that will look cute no matter what. Some people feel the need that because the weather is ugly, they have to look ugly. There is NO EXCUSE!!! Go out and buy some cute water/snow protective shoes and wear them in style. Bad weather does not mean you need to look like an old grandma. Spice up the boots. Tuck in your jeans or sweats into the bottom. But no matter what never wear those big puffy ones that our friend Napoleon Dynamite wore! ~kmf

NYC FASHION

WOW!!! On my visit to New York on Monday, I really realized how awful people dressed in the Midwest! Maybe it's just everyone is 10 times heavier in the Midwest, or maybe it's because all of the major fashion designers are in NY and LA. Come to Chicago! Everyone had the coolest high leather boots on with their jeans tucked into the bottom. I wanted to buy a pair but the pair I wanted were 500 dollars and I was not about to plunk down my credit card when here in the Midwest they would be ruined in 5 minutes once I walked outside in the the wonderful salt filled streets. Hopefully, they will still be in style next year when I won't be living here anymore. Everyone seemed so much taller there too. I am thinking it is because people are not scared to wear heals there. Walking the streets for 5th Avenue everyone looked so chic. Anyways, I went into Bergdorf Goodman's. OMG the most amazing store ever! Every adorable dress was in my size and seemed to be calling my name. But I never realized why the stores put the spring clothes out so early when I still need boots and a snow suit to go outside? Yes, odd. The dresses were too cute for words though. Every pattern, like floral, plain, striped, and eyelet hung on the racks. I almost opened a new credit card just do I could buy a couple dresses. But then I figured that by the time I could actually wear the dresses would be the end of May and by then they would be on sale down a couple hundred dollars. AHHH why can't I be a billionaire? ~kmf

the weather outside is STILL a bit frightful Myspace Layouts

does this make sense to you...
the weather has been quite nasty but lately it has warmed up a bit to about 30 degrees. Now I don't think that that is summer tank top and shorts weather, but it is definitely nice enough weather to maybe skip the heavy coat, gloves, scarf that wraps all around your head and hat. I honestly don't think that it is FLIP FLOP weather yet. When there is still snow upon the grounds it is not flip flop weather yet. When the girl next to you is wearing her gloves and boots still it is not flip flop weather. And when you yourself, the observer is shivering because of your jeans with holes, it is not flip flop weather yet. Come on ladies, have some common sense!

its time for change Myspace Layouts

what possess people to change? Is it stress? Is it the need for a new identity? Or is it just because you are losing your mind? I frequently dye my hair - I've been everything from a brunette to a blond to a redhead. I've also cut my hair real short, with layers and with bangs. I have never gone to the extreme of shaving my head like Britney Spears did. How can you make such a change like that? the crazy thing in all of this is that it's not like she was going into the army, had some head disease or had surgery - she did it herself, right before she went to rehab! I don't think that something like that would every fly at such a conservative, preppy white girl place like where I like. Girls spend mucho money on getting their hair cut, colored and styled. I personally think its a waste of money because a box of $2.50 loreal dye can do just as good of a job as a $100 salon dye job could do and my friends can cut my hair just as well if not even better than some places I've gone to but I don't think that I'd ever go to the BS extreme.

boys & blue/girls & pink Myspace Layouts
I was sitting in class on Thursday minding my own business, kind of spacing out a bit & staring at the massive flakes of snow that were falling down. Our LGBTQ class was about 15 minutes through when in walks one of our two male students. I'm glad that there are males in that class otherwise it would be just another women's studies class. The interesting thing about this guy was the fact that he was wearing pretty much neutral clothing colors, white shoes and then hot pink shoe laces. Yes I said hot pink shoe laces. I was quite intrigued by this especially with the average girls wear pink and boys wear blue stereotypes. I mean come on - how are babies separated? There is the blue "It's a boy sign" and vice versa with the girl. What is the reasoning for this though? I personally think it is quite attractive when guys wear pink, lavender, yellow and other colors that some deem to be "womenly colors." It is so ironic as well that this guy walked into a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer studies class wearing these shoelaces as well. Got to love stereotypes.

crocs

When crocs came out I hated them. I thought they looked like some kind
of jelly bean orthopedic shoe. They're so big and chunky, and much like
everyone's beloved "Uggs" remind me of Herman Munster's frankenstien boot feet. Now let me tell you what I really think...

I was in the bathroom washing my hands and noticed that there were two
girls in the stalls. They both were wearing the same color of light
pinkcrocs. On top of that, they both had on the same gray, oversized, too long, frayed at the bottom sweatpants. I laughed a little to myself and walked out.

I just can't understand why a garment that is so unflattering to a human
foot, which happens to be the only body part which most women would
agree is the easiest part to fit, can become so disgustingly popular. I
admit that I've tried on a pair ofcrocs and, yes, my feet were in podiatric paradise (same goes for the Uggs), but are we beginning
to sacrifice style for comfort? Wasn't the exact opposite popular only
two years ago? I thought suffering was in. I thought the only way to
get respect from your peers was to push through the pain of blisters,
past the unsightliness of callouses, and on to great looking JimmyChoos! Oi vey, just when I'm beginning to think I've got it down.

I'm sticking to my "so 2003" Converse Chucks, thank you. The holes in
those are all natural, baby, made with love.

And I still hate crocs.

OMG Shoes!

...yaddayaddayadda...

So this is going to be interesting because all day long I'm walkin around, lookin around, and I
feel the voice of Jerry Seinfeld echoing in my head, "What is up with that?" (This is in great part due to the many nights sitting with my dad watching sitcoms). I mean, I'm not one to bash my own "people," but seriously my "people" can be pretty unbelievable. Do you ever see or hear something that makes you roll your eyes and giggle a little under your breath? Yeah, me too...all the time. So this is the place where I will share these moments with those who might appreciate it. Cause when these things happen, I just gotta tell someone. So this is our "the Restaurant" where we will congregate to vent about the "puffy shirts" and "low-talkers" in our neighborhood.

.America's Next Top Model. Myspace Layouts

What is fashion? Am I fashionable? Sure I don't walk on the runway wearing clothes that girls who are 5'10" 115lbs wear but I try and at least dress somewhat in style. What's the use though when all I have to impress is girls? Not that i am trying to impress girls or anything, but looking good is important to me. I try and head to class in jeans instead of sweats and try to limit my t-shirt wear to once or twice a week. It isn't the easiest with laundry though, for goodness sake I can't afford to do laundry once a week costing $1.25 to wash and $1.00 to dry. I do find those people who can pull off a fashionable look every single day very interesting though. Some girls I swear get up two hours before class - even if it is an 8AM one - just to shower, pick out their outfit, blowdry and straighten their hair and then finally perfectly apply their make-up.
Who does that???
Especially in an all-women's environment!
I don't think I'll ever understand.

I need to go to the mall

Analyzing the fashions of our generation is an everyday humorous experience. From teeny boppers to those entering the working world, everyone style is vastly different. On an every day basis I encounter those who know everything about fashion, to those who are totally clueless, and those who think they know fashion, but are completely wrong! Fashion isn't just having brand names, it is your own personal style that should reflect you as a person. But some people take their fashion sense a little too far....Personally I am a label whore, but I love finding those great staples to a wardrobe for nothing. You don't need to spend $80 on a plain white tee. Although lord knows I have, Target is the best when it comes to finding cute staples for that perfect outfit. So my advice for today....Go out to Target or Old Navy and pick up those perfect cute tees to go alone with anything. You can dress them up and dress them down; or wear them to bed. Just remember, looking great doesn't mean you have to empty your pockets! By the way I think I saw 15 other girls today wearing the same Burberry scarf as me......oh boy...I think I need to go to the mall! ~kmf
